06/23 (LessWaiting.com Weather) The world has faced increased severe flooding this year, causing major damage and loss of life. Floods have hit numerous countries including Bangladesh, Brazil, China, France, India, Myanmar, Poland, Uganda, and various parts of the U.S. Recently, a statement from the United Nations warned people worldwide to avoid constructing homes in areas with high flood risk. It also urged governments to consider flood risks in urban planning. Such efforts could help decrease the harmful consequences of flooding. With the Atlantic hurricane season beginning, additional flooding may occur in Central America, the southeastern U.S., and the Caribbean islands. The potential for floods involving water mixed with oil from the Gulf of Mexico spill has provoked concern among many. Although humans cannot prevent most flooding, it is important for governments, businesses, and individuals to improve natural disaster evacuation procedures and work to stop deforestation, which greatly exacerbates flooding in many parts of the world.
